Showings and Screenings

Many actors in our community have showings or screenings of short films and other works on the internet, local television, festivals or at theatres.  I have decided to dedicate a page to all these endeavors.  If you have a showing or screening you would like the local community to know about, you can e-mail me at dropin@henryjmah.com to submit the information to be posted to this page.

Henry!

I was wondering if you could please post the following on your site:

In a further effort to make my moviemaking dreams come true, I've applied to get on a brand new reality show produced by Steven Spielberg and Mark Burnett (producer of 'Survivor') called 'On the Lot'.

Sixteen contestants (filmmakers) will be chosen from around the world. Each week they will make a short film and the viewing audience will participate by voting off the worst film and filmmaker. The "surviving" filmaker will be awarded $1 million to make a feature film.

You can help me to get on the show by viewing my film application and giving me a (hopefully positive) review. Please go to www.thelot.com. Then click on the "Action" tab on the left under POPULAR TAGS. Then under FILM GENRES click on "Action & Adventure". My film (Man Without A Name) is on the last (or second last) page, or click on the link below.

Please forward this email to anyone else who may be interested in helping me.

Thanks for your support!

ON THE LOT FILMS ARE NOW ON LINE

Below is a note from Andrew Devilliers who has a film in the ON THE LOT competition.  Drew Taylor and Don Knodel also have films up, so see if you can get on line and vote for each of them.  You can vote for more than one film, so cast votes for all your favourites and support our local filmmakers.

Andrew de Villiers also included this message:

Hello everyone. My submission for the ON THE LOT reality TV show is now online and you can watch my film and vote for it by following the directions in this e-mail.

This is the part where I beg and plead with you all to go to the site and watch my film, vote for it (hopfully you like it a lot) and tell your friends about it too. Right now producers aren't being specific on what they're looking for. It could be personality, quality of product, age or all of the above. Who knows, but what I do know is that the chance that I get an interview is way better if you all vote for my film. Help my movie get on to the most watched list and I've got an interview, just like that.

So go now, and send this message to everyone you know. Voting isn't hard and it's important to support the community. Even if you voted already, you can vote for more than one, so get started already!

BTW, have you seen the latest films added to the site?  Seasoned and amateur filmmakers are adding new work almost every day of the week, so take a look!

The Art of Laziness

Check out some of my latest work in a small film short called THE ART OF LAZINESS at this address:

Ryan (the guy I was working with) was a riot and the script was a lot of fun.  I shot this after staying up all night at Ashley Rose's and Jennie's party, so if I'm a little off, be kind! ;)

Short films ALL BUT GONE, MY BEATEN HEART, and TOFINO are now all available in one special 3 film DVD.

These films feature the work of locals Nathan Reimer, John Silverbeg, Alayna Morris, Phillip Rogerson, Ryan Steele, Linda Darlow, Henry J. Mah and of course yours truly, Kurtis Maguire. (I am in MY BEATEN HEART & TOFINO)

So treat yourself to some short film fun or treat sombody else and put a Maguire in their DVD collection (and I don't mean that Toby guy)

If you wish to purchase a copy contact John Silverberg at 778-239-0711 or by e-mail at jonsilverberg@hotmail.com.

Thanks and I'll see you from the Silver Screen

MONICA HAMBURG HAS A SHORT FILM ON LINE
http://www.ifilm.com/ifilmdetail/2732089

My friend Monica Hamburg, who was one of the early drop in actors, has formed an alliance with another actor with a camera and they have shot their first short film which can be seen on the internet.

It is this pioneering spirit that will fuel the Canadian film industry in the future.  Since we now have so much access to media and technology, it would behoove you as budding filmmakers and performers to create your own work right from scratch, as these two have done.

Hi friends,

Suzka and I have completed our first short for (our company) “MonSu Films”!

It is viewable online at http://www.ifilm.com/ifilmdetail/2732089 (and potentially more sites soon).

This is our first film, and as such, it is somewhat simple. Now that we have one under our belt we'll be moving on to our second, and more. Our goal is to have them online and (in coordination with other tactics) use them to gain publicity.

This is where you come in: If you have a chance, please watch the film and, if you like it, review it online. As it is for publicity, I need the comments posted to be fairly positive (at least about the acting). (Yes, I am tainting the process – I’ll schedule in feeling guilty later :) So: If you do have any other comments, critiques, or even questions, I would, of course, appreciate hearing those as well. Please email those to me, though, rather than posting them.

If you like it, forward this email to your friends.

Thank you all for your continued support!!!

All the best,

Monica Hamburg

Rafael Pellerin and Janessa O'Hearn in two short films on line

Greg sent me the link for this first one, called "Owned", it stars Raf and Janessa as two gamers and what could ensue when you game on line with people you only know as their characters.  Sometimes who they are is deceiving.

The second short is something that Janessa did when she was 17 (oh so long ago!).  I thought it was cute.

Henry!

I did it! I got accepted as a finalist to Filminute - an international one-minute film contest (all films must be exactly one minute long).

The entries are from all over the world, and most of them from professional crews. My film is just me behind the camera, holding the mike boom, and my actor friend Ian. We're like the garage band going up against the pros.

It's really exciting. I'm super-stoked.

If anyone would like to check it out and possibly vote for me - My film is called: Charlie

Go to www.filminute.com to view it.

It's not my usual style. I was just trying something out. I usually do comedy.

Rob won an award for this project.  See the e-mail below for details.

BOEING 787 DEMO MOVIE by Rob Hickling

Below is a link a demo movie that Rob Hickling (a director that at one time had frequented our drop in sessions) created out of a need at his work environment.  It goes to show that you can make movies and work your creativity in your art pretty much anywhere.  All you need is the inspiration and the wherewithal to follow through on it.

Henry,

Hey, how's it going?  I haven't been to the drop in for a long time.  That's because I'm way out in Richmond making the fat bucks with Boeing.  I'm still making movies, just at a slower pace than before.  I've got two in editing right now.

I put together a demo movie with one of the guys on my development team.  We co-produced it.  He rendered all the images using Maya.  I did the editing, sound recording and mixing, etc. Another guy on my team, Pat did the music.  It turned out great.

If you think it's worthy, please send out the url to the mailing list.

Rob Hickling

The story:
I am a writer/director/editor/filmmaker with a day job as a software architect. I used to be fairly regular at the director's sessions, but two things happened: a new baby and a new contract with Boeing. I'm essentially working in a role similar to a director, but for a big software project. Personally, I'd rather be making movies, but right now it's time to pay the bills. A couple people I hired for my software team have film and media background, so we teamed up to produce a demo movie to show at Boeing and see what kind of interest we can create.

The technical details:
We came up with the idea, then Sunny Wong built a 3D model of the new Boeing 787 in Maya. The 787 is Boeing's new all-composite airplane due for first flight in 2007. He combined his 3D model with some stock photography and computer generated effects to render out the image sequences.

For the sound recording, I parked at the end of the runway at YVR, and stuck my shotgun mic out the window. It was deafening.

The music actually came from a short horror movie I'm working on. Pat Wilson composed the score, and gave me a CD along with a bunch of sample music. The samples were good, but not quite right. Then for a laugh I plunked down the horror movie music and something magic happened. I think it works great. What a surprise!

It's online. Click here to view:    http://www.sunyiu.com/demo/fly
